Importance of Intention

I've often heard it advised in plant medicine circles to enter ceremony or dieta work without a specific intention or prayer and to simply open to whatever will happen. I respectfully disagree and wanted to share some perspective for consideration.

I've found that the time and energy involved in the process of self-examination needed to identify aspects of yourself you wish to explore more deeply or shift/transform in some way is a powerful way of meeting these plant spirits "halfway". It is a way of telling them "I see where I need to do my inner work, I acknowledge and accountability for these patterns and habits that I know are less than the ideals I hold for myself, and I am willing to do the work alongside you to examine and shift them".

This prayer made beforehand, when first planning a plant dive, made from humility and honest confession of what is can be an act of respect and honoring that invites a partnership with spirit. I feel that once these intentions have been formed and clearly conveyed to the plants with conviction, this is where surrender, trust, and opening to the wisdom of how spirit decides to weave this prayer with you comes in.

I've found for myself in times of coming into such work without a clearly defined focus, I am taken into so many directions that it creates numerous incomplete processes that become chaotic to navigate and nearly impossible to gracefully integrate in the time after. When I do come with a strong and focused prayer, the unfolding is in perfect alignment with this intention and I can see any difficulty through a lens of this initial prayer actively weaving. In my humble opinion, if someone comes into this work without a "why" perhaps the readiness isn't quite there yet.
